How to look after a diesel engine
A diesel engine differs from a petrol one in a number of parts that need special attention. Looking after it, though, is not much harder. Here is what to watch so you can drive with peace of mind.
-
1
The glow plugs
Check the glow plugs and their wiring. If the engine is not properly pre-heated before it starts, it can cause you plenty of headaches later on.
-
2
The seals
Check the engine seals often: they are under high pressure, and it is important that they are sound.
-
3
The filters
Keep to the schedule for changing the various filters.
-
4
The cooling system
Check the cooling system regularly – it matters a great deal for a diesel engine. That means the hoses, the antifreeze level and any leaks from the radiator or the seals.
-
5
Additives
Most diesel engines do not “like” additives. Check in your vehicle’s manual whether the manufacturer allows adding them to the fuel.
-
6
Take your time
Allow enough time to check everything calmly. Better a small thing found in time than a serious problem in the middle of the motorway.
